Tecumseh - BAYLES and ICE Connections

A few weeks ago, while in southwest PA and researching family history, I found tons of documentation from both the Greene County and Fayette County genealogy societies relating to various branches of my family including the Bayles (three separate documents).

I have heard the “Tecumseh” story all my life, but did not find anything written until now that would associate Tecumseh with the Bayles family. My experience in genealogy makes me wary of “rumors” and “family stories” because I have found they can cause problems to say the least. BUT, since there is no official government documentation that I have found to date which provides Tecumseh’s actual date or place of birth, I feel the knowledge of generations before us must be given credence since we can’t “invent” the truth.

My first discovery was in Greene County, PA. An extensive list of “Descendants of Jesse Bayles (died 1806)” from Dorothy T. Hennen states:

“1.2 Mary Bayles, 11-6-1763 to 6-17-1822 married (1) an Indian – name unknown (2) 1782 Andrew Ice (of Frederick & Eleanor Leviston, widow Thompson)
1.2.1 Tecumseh 1779 to 10-5-1813 (War of 1812, British) Killed in action at the Battle of the Thames – Brig. Gen. - British Army)
       1.2.2 Jesse Ice 5-19-1786 to 11-8-1866 (War of 1812)
       1.2.3 Abraham Ice 2-18-1790 to 9-23-1861
       1.2.4 Elizabeth Ice 10-1-1792 to 8-22-1870
       1.2.5 Frederick Ice 1-10-1796 to 5-6-1881
       1.2.6 Mary Ice 9-19-1799 to10-20-1802
       1.2.7 Andrew Ice 12-25-1803 to 7-3-1805
1.2.1       Tecumseh md ???
1.2.1.1        Naythawayne 1799 to ____ 1840 md Sacomse
1.2.1.1.1       Waylaskse (twin) ____ to 1869 md Gatakepiasika
1.2.1.1.2       Maythataskese (twin) ____ to 1827
1.2.1.1.3       Naswapama
1.2.1.1.4       Pasequameasy ____ to 1857
1.2.1.1.5       Walkoshaka (Jimfry) ____ to 1865
1.2.1.1.6       Wapameapto (Big Jim) 1834 to 9-30-1900

(The list of Tecumseh’s descendants is too extensive to be placed here but is available to anyone who may want a copy.)

My second discovery was in Fayette County, PA. Dorothy Hammarlund (GGG granddaughter of David Bayles, Mary’s older brother), on family group sheet lists the 2nd child of Jesse Bayles and Mary Marie Monraine as “Mary” born 6 Nov 1763” and she notes “kidnapped by Indians at age 6, escaped age 16”; “one son, born of Indian, named Tecumseh”.

To summarize, it is quite likely that Mary Bayles Ice is indeed the mother of Tecumseh. See the ICE Forum for more discussion.
