How to find parents of Levi Pitner

Hi --

I've found a notation that my gg grandfather Levi H. Pitner was b. in Greene County, PA in 1849, but I've found no trace of his parents anywhere. I'm stumped as to where to look -- since birth certificates weren't filed. Any suggestions?
