I'm researching the Smiths of Jefferson County in a closely related line. Your 1st generation, James, was the son of William Smith and Isabella Duncan. James had a brother Andrew Smith who married an unrelated Isabella Smith, the daughter of John Smith and Mary McFarlin. All of that was in Ireland, but many of their descendants seem to have ended up near Beechwoods. The small community of Smithtown, just west of Falls Creek, has its name for good reason.
One issue in sorting out this family (besides that fact that the surname is Smith) is that James, William, Andrew and John come up repeatedly.
My Andrew Smith m. Isabella Smith about 1820 in Ireland. I believe most of their family emigrated around 1847, much later than many of their cousins. Their son James married Mary Ann Atwell. Among their sons was John Atwell Smith, my ancestor, who married Mary McClure. There were Smith-McClure marriages in Ireland in this family and I suspect it's the same McClure family, though I can't prove it. John died in a mining accident in 1892 and Mary raised the kids.
Their daughter Harriet Jane Smith m. Lawrence E. Moore of Beechwoods. Harriet died in 1946 and is buried in Green Cove Springs, Fla. Her son Kenneth F. Moore, b. 1915 in Jefferson County, is my grandfather. He died earlier in 2006 and is buried at Bushnell National Cemetery in Sumter Co., Fla.
