DESPONDENT ACTRESS TAKES CARBOLIC ACID
Pathetic Letter Tells of a Broken Heart.
Mae ESCHER, an actress, aged twenty-two years, ended her life by swallowing a quantity of carbolic acid in a room at the Lawrence Hotel last night.
On the floor, a sealed letter was found, addresses to the girl's mother, Mrs. A. M. ESCHER, 627 McKean Street, Philadelphia. The letter was opened to disclose the motive for her act. It read, in part, as follows:
"My Dear Mother - I lay myself down to rest. I have lost the love of you, and also of the man I love. I died with a broken heart. I hope that God above will look after you, and also after me. Let me lay with my dear sister Annie and her baby. May God hear my prayer."
Before her health gave out, the young woman was employed in the chorus of a local burlesque stock company. She had been despondent for some time, and intimated yesterday that she would commit suicide.
