Cheryl, This is interesting! I have been trying to find Stefan (could be Stjepan or Stipe in Croatian) and Kata ALAGIC. I found only a couple of records, 1930 census and WW II Draft Reg. and then I found a Soc Sec record for Steven HALAGICH ! The 1930 census indicates that Kate and son John arrived in the US in 1913. When I did searches for ALAGIC I was finding most recent records indicates (by the given name) that they are or were Muslim or Orthodox (Serb). But when I searched for HALAGIC I now find Kata and Ivica (eeveetsah) which is John arriving in 1913 they were coming from Čamerovac Slunj(which is Kordun region) and where many Pittsburgh Croats are from including Cindrich, Salopek comes from just north of there... maybe those names are familiar to you? There destination was to husband/father Stefan HALAGIC living at 187 Ohio St Pittsburgh Name: Kata Halagic Arrival Date: 9 Aug 1913 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1888 Age: 25 Gender: Female Port of Departure: Le Havre Race: Croatian Ship Name: La Savoie And here is how Ellis Island org saw Stefan's manifest First Name: Stjepan Last Name: Halogic Ethnicity: Hungry, Slovak Last Place of Residence: Ca..., Hungary Date of Arrival: Jan 15, 1910 Age at Arrival: 27y Gender: M Marital Status: M Ship of Travel: Samland Port of Departure: Antwerp Manifest Line Number: 0028 Notice they have him listed as Slovak which would not be the case in that part of Croatia (I believe this was an error on the part of the agent at the port of departure who filled in the manifest) In regards to your Slovak ancestors I wondered if they were Greek Rite Catholics. Many Greek Rite Slovaks and Ruthenians converted to Orthodox Church due to American (who had mostly an Irish heritage) who frowned on the practice of Greek Rite Catholic Priest marrying) the Irish heritage of the American Catholic Church was not good for those coming from Central and Eastern Europe.
