My ggg--grandmother, Harriet (Phelps?) (Kittle) Butler, b. about 1812, was, I think, a daughter of Griswold and Rhoda (Squier) Phelps of Nicholson, PA, later of Steuben Co., IN. I have presented the case for this connection and information about Griswold and Rhoda's descendants at my Web site, address below.
Because of an absence of written documentation, I am considering mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) tests to support or disprove Harriet's place in the Griswold Phelps family. I would need a volunteer to represent one of Rhoda (Squier) Phelps' daughters or one of Rhoda's sisters -- a man or woman with a firm descent though the mother's line in every generation back to one of those females. My Web site contains more details on the test.
Rhoda (Squier) Phelps was the daughter of Stephen Squier and Margaret Magie, who were married in Hanover, NJ, in 1789.
Any information related to locating a volunteer or to your experiences with mtDNA testing would be very welcome. Thanks,
