From the additional info supplied by Jeffrey's great aunt and some census searching I was able to find the ancestry of this Leander Pace.
On the 1880 census of Kimball, St. Clair Co, MI is William H. Pace age 35 b. CAN,parents b. CAN, wife Hannan Quackenbush, 29 b. CAN, dau. Lizzie 10 b. MI, son Leander 4 b. MI.
This William H. is on the 1850 census of St. Clair City, St. Clair Co, MI as follows:
Leander Pace, head, 36 Carpenter b. CAN, wife Catherine 36 b. CAN, children: John 13, Hannah 11, Sarah 8, William 5, all born in Canada.
There were only 7 Pace families on the 1880 Michigan census and 6 of them appear to be closely related. Fred Pace is listed at age 74 with wife Penelope and son Charles. Four of the other families are sons of Fred: Jacob, Samuel, Daniel and William B.
My inference is that Leander Pace on the 1850 census is a younger brother of Fred which implies that their parents migrated from NJ to Canada between 1807 and 1814.
There is some evidence that this family may have come from Ireland, although Prussia (Germany) is also a possibillity.
Gordon W. Pace
