John:
Since Elizabeth M. Pace was b. in MS in 1843 and married there I thought I would be able to find her with her parents on the 1850 census. But she is not there. Apparently the family was missed on the census.
Since close families often moved together in those days I decided to check for other Paces in Henderson Co, TX on the 1880 census. There is only one and it turns out that he was a very close neighbor of Elizabeth M. Pace in Willow Springs, Henderson Co, TX. He is Madison Touchstone Pace b. 1850 MS with 3rd wife Martha J. Trammell age 18, son Thomas Futch Pace age 11, b. MS, daughter Mioma L. age 1 b. TX and daughter Ella Malissa age 6mo b. TX and niece Nancy A. E. Pace age 15, daughter of Madison's brother Dempsey.
Also in the household as a laborer was George Allison, age 20 b. TX!! Could he be a son of Edwin T. Allison?
Per Madison's obit he came to Texas at the age of 18 with Wiley Thornton (his brother-in-law) and a brother. At the age of 23 he was converted and joined the Primitive Baptist Church and began a long preaching career. He preached over East Texas including Cool Springs, Pilgrims Rest and 43 years at Corinth in Henderson Co, Rome Community.
Madison was a son of Thomas Jefferson Pace b. 5/17/1811 Clarke Co, AL and Jensey Ann Touchstone b. 2/6/1811 Copiah Co, MS. They had 14 children.
I think it is obvious that Elizabeth M. Pace was very closely related to Madison T., perhaps even brother and sister. Thomas had a son Edward J. b. 1/31/1846 and a daughter Mary E. b. 1/19/1848. Perhaps the name was Mary Elizabeth and was sometimes shown as Elizabeth M. Mary supposedly married a J. H. Thornton in 1866.
Another possibility is Thomas's brother Richmond Pace who had seven known children born from 1838 to 1849. He died in Bowie Texas after 1892.
So, what do you think?
Gordon W. Pace
