I have had the good fortune to make contact with a fellow PACE tracker who has helped me sort Hudson Pace out and correct my errors: First we suspect that if this Hudson Pace did in fact marry Mary King, then the year being quoted on-line for their marriage is likely a type error. That is, that they married in 1839 not 1949. Tracking Hudson & family through the census we find: ============================================== 1840 Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle Co., Virginia - M704/R549/P118 - Hudson Pace - 1 male bet. 20-30Ys; - (Hudson) 1 female bet. 20-30Ys - (Mary King?) no children listed. NOTE: Employed in manufacturing and trade ============================================= 1850 Sep 8 - 57th Dist., Roanoke Co., Virginia - R973/Bk1/P294 - Samuel Chandler age 30, b. VA, Occ: Miller; Martha age 28, b. VA; William J. age 6, b. VA; John N. or W. age 4, b. VA; Mary E. age 7Ms, b. VA; Robert age 20, b. VA; and Hudson Pace age 35, b. VA, Occ: Cooper. ============================================ NOTE: Mary seems to have died by 1850 while Hudson is found living with his brother-in-law Howell Chandler's relatives in Roanoke Co.VA. . I said earlier that this was his sister Martha Pace Chandler's family...sorry! My mistake. His sister Martha & husband Howell Chandler were living in Ohio by this time. . Mary & Hudson's two young sons were apparently sent to live with Mary's kin back in Fluvanna Co. since Hudson's parents were now off to Ohio. Living near the Chandlers is a Short family, through whom Hudson probably met his 2nd wife Martha Short. They married Feb.12.1852. ============================================ 1850 census for Fluvanna Co., VA King, Sarah, 40 or 60, VA King, Mildred, 28, VA King, Pamelia, 21, VA King, David J., 20, VA Pace, Henderson, 9, VA Pace, David W., 7, VA ============================================== By 1860 Hudson has now married Martha Short, fathered three more children and has moved everyone to Bedford Co. VA ============================================== 1860 Jul 3 - So. Revenue Dist., Davis Mill P O, Bedford Co., Virginia - M653/R1335/P480 - H Pace (male) age 45, b. VA; & M (female) age 35; H (male) age 18, b. VA; David age 16, b. VA; George age 5, b. Va; S. (female) age 3, b. VA; and Infant age 1, b. VA. ============================================ Sadly, the Civil War seems to have taken Hudson's oldest sons Joseph Henderson and David W. Pace. Both were Privates in the Confederate army (58th VA Inf. Reg.,Company B) and died within 4 months of each other in 1862. ============================================ 1870 Sep 30 - Chamblissburg Twp., Bedford Co., Virginia - R16351/Bk1/Pg84b Hudson Pace age 58, b. VA, Occ: farmer; Martha ge 46, b. VA; Sarah E. age 13, b. VA; Willie M. age 11, b. VA; and George Rush age 22, b. VA, Occ: farmer. ============================================ Son George, who would have been abt. 15 in 1870, has gone missing. Does anyone have anything on him? ============================================ 1880 Jun 12/14 - Chamblissburg Twp., Bedford Co., Virginia - T9/R1355/Bk1/P39a/ED13 Hudson Pace age 63, b. VA, Occ: farmer; Martha age 59, b. VA; Abram Howell age 25 (son-in-law), b. VA, Occ: carpenter; Willie M. age 20 (dau), b. VA; and Gordon E. age 7Ms, b. Oct, VA. ============================================ 1880-1900 - Hudson died ============================================ 1900 Jun 29 - Amsterdam Dist., Botetourt Co., Virginia - T623/R1701/P130 - w/ dau Willie & her fam - Martha Pace (mo-in-law) age 75, b. 1825, VA, "WIDOW", 1 child, 1 living. ============================================ Bye for now, Kathleen Notify Administrator about this message?
