It might be useful to set the stage and review some historical facts I've put together on my family and the PACE-KITTSON-HILL history, Dakotas Montana Minnesota Manitoba. Here's what was happening, hopefully accurate.
PK Murphy, book editor and PACE desc. LEE-PACE wants me to write a book, maybe this is a start.

This group of people of St. Paul connected with Winnipeg,
in the Steam boat era, later railroads, 1870-1890's which looked like a golden era of entrapeneurship of the northern states. The book "Atlas Shrugged" by Ann Rand was inspired by this era and the notable James J. Hill, I mention below.

By 1872, KITTSON & James Jerome HILL established the Red River Transportation Company,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Jerome_Hill
KITTSON hired James HILL as bookkeeper (who later, built the Great Northern Rly. 1890's across northern states to Seattle.)

Kittson was instrumental in the end of the HBC monopoly in 1849, (one site says) and was Mayor of St. Paul at that time. A county in NW MN is named KITTSON Co. adjacent to border with province of Manitoba, Canada.

KITTSON-PACE
Son Alfred KITTSON m Violet PACE (b Canada abt 1870) at Hastings, MN abt 1909, south east of St.Paul; She was d/o a HENRY PACE a watchmaker from London,Eng. Ottawa,Canada & Lethbridge,NWT (Alberta 1905) Known to my Pace family of Lethbridge.

HENRY's brother FRED PACE
http://www.phc.igs.net/~gordpace/fredpace.htm
joined the North West Mounted Police in 1873 and arrived in Winnipeg, initial recreuitment Fort Gary, probably arriving via one of Kittson's Steam boats. FRED had passed through Chicago, en route to Winnipeg, staying at a hotel where Jesse James gang was staying, (src. Calgary Public Library police records)

Another of Kittson's sons was Dr. JOHN KITTSON of the North West Mounted Police, and probably knew FRED PACE. Dr. Kittson later ran a drug store at Maple Creek, Saskachewan which is near the famous Fort Walsh, which is in the Cypress Hills, southern Sask just a few Miles north of ND.

FRED PACE of the NWMP, later operated a trading post at Standoff, between Fort Benton,MT and Fort Macleod,NWT. (Alberta since 1905) where the famous Whiskey Trade was subdued by the NWMP. Fred Pace, operating his trading post (confiscated from whiskey traders) was said to be influential in helping convince Blackfoot spokesman to sign Treaty #7 between the Governments. Fred Pace is highly respected in the 1st Nation communities and Historical Society of southern Alberta today.

Back to Minnesota:
At nearby Red Wing, MN., abt. the time, was:
WILLIAM HENRY PACE 1874-1947 Moved from ONTARIO to MANITOBA about 1896 then to MINNESOTA. Married twice, 4 children from each marriage; 4 CANADIAN,4 AMERICAN. Said to be buried at RED WING,MN.
+ Kate wed in 1896. This info is similar to your story.
I don't know if this PACE connects with the others.

Abt 1850, Norman Kittson 1814-1888 b Sorel, Quebec
was mayor of St. Paul and partner in American Fur Co. and I believe the 1670 HBC Charter of London Society of Merchants' was still in effect until 1667 when Confederation of Canada took place. see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Confederation

The Minnesota Territory http://members.tripod.com/~YLM2/slide10.html
was part of "Ruperts Land" of the Hudson Bay Co. and under charter. Canadian Confederation basically ended the charter which had been in effect since 1670. No doubt, KITTSON & Alexander Tilloch GALT, a signer of Canadian Confederation at Charlottetown, PEI. knew each other as GALT built the railway from Lethbridge to Great Falls & intersected with HILL's Great Northern Rly. at Shelby, Montana. They all needed coal. Galt was in the coal business. My PACE-SQUIRE folk came out from England at that time to Lethbridge. Somehow, my people got involved with the telephone company later, AGT Alberta Gov.Telephones & Bell Telephone of Montreal. I have letter here from these telephone companies about a trunk of my grandfather's after he died at Lethbridge. But since all this involves the end of the 1670 charter of the Hudson Bay Company of the London Society of Merchants' at the time of Canadian Confederastion 1667, probably Minnesota became a state of the Union at this time, and so many French Canadian/Minnesota residents of the fur trade, in the area, maybe including your people, some of this may make some sence.

Someone mentioned their Pace ancestor was from Indiana and went to ND. That Pace lot were connected to Pendroy people who wound up in a place called Pendroy, Montana, west of Great Falls. HILL ran a GN spur line to this town. Then a rail line was ran from Lethbridge to Great Falls for the coal industry of Lethbridge. The CPR, GN Great Falls needed the coal. My PACE-SQUIRE family was connected with this industry and knew Henry & Fred PACE connected to KITTSON & HILL. indirectly. Fort Benton, Fort Mcleod, Lethbridge, Great Falls. Rather obscure, at the moment, but 1890's events, put together, may help unwrap some vagueness.
MARION PACE, born 1842 in Indiana.
See - http://home.att.net/~Pendroy/pace-jac.html - PENDROY web site. A ggreat uncle Marion Pace, the 3rd brother was in the home of JACOB PENDROY, his grandfather, during 1850 census." He died in ND. Maybe some of this has a meaning, I am also interested in Railway history. I visit the Railway Museum at Rockwood,Ontario where James J. Hill was born. Since HILL KITTSON PACE connects and my PACE (although another PACE) was also involved, it's an interesting story, to me, and maybe some others, like your branch of the Pace family. There is more to this story but too much to display here. gtp3066@phc.igs.net Gord Pace,Ontario,Can.
