Hi, my name is Damian Pacewicz, I'm from Poland. Now I'm studing architecture in Szczecin (Stettin), I live in Bydgoszcz (Bromberg). My family lived there since sec.W.W (1945). earlier, as it has been told me, my grandpa lived in Wilno, Litwa (the capital of Lithuania). My grandpa Józef Pacewicz died 3 years ago, was born on 2 Februar 1929. (if someone will be interested I will search for better accurate information, or ask my grandma).
According to your questions. Poland and Litwa (Lithuania) had a very rich history (many wars and cruelty). The two countries had some similarities as neighbours. Since the 14th century, to 18th cen.,thay had a union, Państwo Polsko-litewskie, to be better prottected for krzyżacy (crusader knights). After the first world war, Poland and Litwa, were divided (raped) by Germany and Russia. After few risings, that has been cruely and bloody fighted, Poland were free, but it wasn't least long. (to that time Wilno were polish as like as warsaw, to the second world war). On 1 september 1939 german soldiers atacked the polish west borders
. England which sweard to help in case of war, did not come. After 2 weeks the whole country were occupied. Poland fighted from the underground 5 long years... After that the third Reich was fighted. The country Poland could exist again, but... moved 500km west (!). Since than in the Polish country we have got citties like Szczecin (Stettin) that were earlier german. Litwa does exist too. But as russian republics. Polish families as like as my grandpas had been moved with force to the polish country, german families were moved west to germany. Now it seems to be unreal and funny, but many families has been splitted, their adresses changed, and finding relatives is still difficult.
...
Maybe now it will be easier for you to understand, that your gradma could be polish and could live in Litwa (Lithuania), too. That were two countries like one, maybe still would be.
..
Sorry for my poor english
Greatings, Damian Pacewicz
I will be waiting for reply
