Jack,

You are right! The two Pacheco's are related. The family line actually arrived in Portugal and Spain with the conquering Roman armies of Julius Ceasar around 93BC. In fact, the first person known to have this surname was Vivio "Pacieco" who was a General under Julius Ceasar. Notice the spelling. In Italian the "ci" sound is that of the "ch" sound. See the similarities?
There were three main areas of the Iberian peninsula at the time of the Romans. The Romans divided it into three regions: Tarraconensis and Baetica for what is now modern Spain and Lusitania for modern Portugal. There is some very interesting history behind our surname. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.
