If I e-mail you, no one else can read the juicy details, so I'll post them here and hope you have the e-mail notification turned on. It looks like there was some question, because they didn't hang him. Exactly what the questions were isn't clear.

You are right - the fellow who had the details of the murder trial deleted his data sometime in the last 5 years.

and enter Thomas Pack, spouse Hicks, you find the lady who has Thomas' parents as William Pack and unknown lady.

Others, on
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
have his wife as BAIN, not HICKS.

Abstracts from the Circuit Court Minutes Book 1815-1819
(Abstracted by Thomas Webb, Dekalb Co, Tn)

(pg 151) 10/1/1818 Thomas Pack late of the County of Jackson, labourer who stands indicted for the crime of murder was led to the bar in custody of the Sheriff of Smith County; pled not guilty to allegations in the indictment; jury impaneled.

(pg 156) 10/3/1818 Jury having heard the evidense against Thomas Pack find him guilty as charged.

(pg 168) 10/7/1818 "...for reasons appearing to the satisfaction of the court" a new trail granted to Thomas Pack, guilty verdict set aside.

(p169) 10/7/1818 Thomas Pack placed in Smith County Jail until March term of court.

(p213) 3/30/1819 Some of the witnesses in Thomas Pack case fail to appear: John & Peggy Sadler, James Ferguson and John Muncy, all of Jackson Cty; Christopher Garet & George Patterson of Smith Cty; Hannah & George Hutchinson of _____Cty. Pack pleaded not guilty, "for his trail put himself upon the County and the Solicitor General; jury impaneled.

(p 215) 4/2/1819 Jury finds Thomas Pack guilty.

(pgs 225-226) 4/3/1819 Sent to Jackson Cty for "a more complete copy" of proceedings of Pack case; Pack returned to Sumner Cty jail until September.

(p261) 10/4/1819 "State of Tennessee vs Thomas Pack. Indictment for murder of Benjamin Bates. Today came the Attorney General and says he no further intends prosecuting the said defendant on the above indictment and with (illegible word) of the court enters a nolle prosequi therein."

(p 264) 10/5/1819 "State vs Thomas Pack indictment for murder of Willie Jones" The Attorney General pro tem asked for this case to be transferred to the Supreme Court of Errors & Appeals at Sparta next December.

(p334) 10/12/1820 Thomas Pack "who stands convicted of the murder of Willie Jones" by attorney "withdraws his reasons hereto for filed in arrest of judgement."

(p344) 10/16/1820 State vs Thomas Pack. Indictment for Murder. Considered by the Court "that the said Thomas Pack be branded on the inside of the left hand with the letter M in the presence of the Court between 10 & 12 o'clock on Oct 17 and be imprisoned in the Smith Cty jail 9 months from this day and pay court costs and remain in custody until he pay or give security."

NOTE: Jackson Cty courthouse burned in 1870's
