Descendants of Anna Maria Pack Brown, 1860 - 1949
Posted by: Ted Pack (ID *****6680) Date: January 28, 2013 at 09:04:52
In Reply to: Letters from a descendant of Lorenzo Dow Pack, 1831 - 1893 by Ted Pack of 1807

This is the lady who wrote the three letters.

First Generation

1. Anna Maria Pack 1-10 was born on 23 Aug 1860 in Brush Creek, Monroe, Virginia (now WV). She appeared in the census in 1870 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1910 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1920 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1930 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She died on 19 Sep 1949 in Orchard, Monroe, West Virginia. She was buried in Ballard, Monroe, West Virginia - Orchard Cem.

1910, Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia

Brown, Annie M, head, 49, Widowed, WV, WV, Va
Brown, Sydney J, son, 25, WV, WV, Va
Brown, Ada B, dau, 19, WV, WV, Va
Brown, Henry C, son, 17, WV, WV, Va
Broyles, Stella M, Boarder, 4, WV, WV, WV

[The first three are transcribed as "Browne" in Ancestry.com]

Anna is with her son Sidney J in 1920.

1930, Red Sulphur, Monroe, West Virginia

Brown, Anne, head, 69, WV, WV, Florida
Brown, Sidney J, son, 45, WV, WV, WV
Brown, Virginia L, gr-dau, 18, WV, WV, WV

[It really says "Florida" for Anne's mother's BP. Not all census entries are accurate.]

She is probably in Red Sulphur in 1940, but I can't find her. This one is close:

1940, Red Sulphur, Monroe, West Virginia

Brown, Anne B, head, 88, Widowed, 4th grade, WV
Brown, Sidney A, son, 48, 8th grade, WV

The first names are right, the district is right, the relationship (Mom is the head of household, her son Sidney living with her) but
1) Both middle initials are wrong
2) Annie is 8 years too old
3) Sidney is 8 years too young

More research needed.

Find-a-Grave:

Annie M. Brown
Birth: 1860
Death: 1949

Orchard Cemetery, Ballard, Monroe, West Virginia

Anna Maria Pack and Henry Clay Brown were married on 20 Jan 1876 in Brush Creek, Monroe, West Virginia. Henry Clay Brown 2-4,11,12 was born on 8 Jul 1842 in Glade Hill, Franklin, Virginia. He died on 10 Oct 1909 in Orchard, Monroe, West Virginia.

We have another case of two brothers marrying two sisters here. Charles Andrew Brown married Jennie Lee Pack. Charles' brother, Henry C. Brown, married Anna Maria Pack, Jennie's sister. Charles and Henry were the sons of Reuben Shelton Brown and Mary Ann Frances Witcher.

In 1880 they were living in Red Sulphur, Monroe, West Virginia:

[Indexed as "Braun"]

In 1930 Annie is the Head of Household again, as she was in 1910, and Lucile is Virginia.

Sidney registerd for the draft in 1942, which gives us his residence, middle name and exact birth date.

Find-a-Grave:

Sidney J. Brown
Birth: 1884
Death: 1955

Orchard Cemetery, Ballard, Monroe, West Virginia
+4iii.Ada Blanche Brown , born on 15 May 1890, Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia; married Cephus Douthat Martin , on 24 Jun 1912, Monroe County, West Virginia; died on 20 Feb 1949, Bluefield, Mercer, West Virginia.
5iv.Henry C Brown 4,6 was born in Feb 1893 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia.

Henry is on the PRF with no source citations. He supposedly died in 1915 in Orchard, Monroe, West Virginia. I can't find a death record, nor can I find him in 1920.

Second Generation

2. Aubrey P Brown 4,15-20 (Anna Maria Pack -1) was born on 23 Mar 1883 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Springfield, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Milton Hall Precint, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1930 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He died in 1939. He was buried in Antioch, Fluvanna, Virginia - Wesleys Chapel.
Aubrey marries. His marriage record is remarkably detailed:

Aug 3, 1904, Mercer County

Aubrey P. Brown, age 21, b. Monroe Co., resides Monroe
Parents: Henry C and Annie M
Occ: teacher

Jennie B Harman, age 19, b. Mercer Co., resides Mercer
Parents: R A and Bettie

1910, Springfield, Monroe, West Virginia

Brown, Aubrey W, head, 27, WV, Va, WV, teacher, free school
Brown, Jennie B, wife, 24, WV, Va, WV

They have been married for 5 years.

Aubrey registerd for the WWI draft, which gave us his middle name, Pierce, and his exact birth date, 23 Mar 1883.

In 1920 Aubrey has a different wife.

Milton Hall Precinct, Monroe, West Virginia

Brown, Aubrey, head, 36, WV, Va, WV, farmer
Brown, Ella, wife, 36, Va, Va, Va

I found a reference to Ella Eulalia Crouch, married Aubrey Pierce Brown, 1913, on an FTM site, with no sources. More research needed.

1930, Red Sulphur, Monroe, West Virginia

Brown, Aubrey P, head, 47, WV, WV, WV
Brown, Ella E, wife, 46, Va, Va, Va
Brown, Mildred, dau, 9, WV, WV, Va

He was 30 at first marriage, she 29. About half the people who have been married more than once answer that question with age at THIS marriage. We know Aubrey was 21 when he married Jennie, so this strongly hints, but does not prove, that he married Ella about 17 years ago, in 1913.

Aubrey P and Ella E are the only two people named Brown listed on Find-d-Grave in Wesleys Chapel Cemetery, Antioch, Fluvanna, Virginia, which hints they were husband and wife. The initials and birth years match the census. Find-a-Grave contributor "LK" doesn't list sources for Ella's maiden name. I'm going to put it down as Crouch, but make her nickname "Speculative".

Here's Aubrey's Find-a-Grave entry:

Aubrey P Brown
Birth: 1883
Death: 1939

Wesleys Chapel Cemetery, Antioch, Fluvanna, Virginia

Aubrey P Brown and Jennie B Harman were married on 3 Aug 1904 in Mercer County, West Virginia. Jennie B Harman 15,16 was born in 1885/86 in Mercer County, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1910 in Springfield, Monroe, West Virginia. She died between 1911 and 1912 in West Virginia (prob).
Given the customs of the times, Jennie probably died before 1918, when Aubrey's kext of kin was Ella. I haven't found a death record, so I'm guessing. She could have deserted or divorced.

Aubrey P Brown and Ella E (Speculative) Crouch were married between 1912 and 1914. Ella E (Speculative) Crouch 18,19,21 was born in 1883 in Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1920 in Milton Hall Precint, Monroe, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1930 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She died in 1967. She was buried in Antioch, Fluvanna, Virginia - Wesleys Chapel.
I haven't found a marriage record, 1940 census entry or a death record. Here is what is probably Ella's Find-a-Grave entry:

Ella E Crouch Brown
Birth: 1883
Death: 1967

Wesleys Chapel Cemetery, Antioch, Fluvanna, Virginia Aubrey P Brown and Ella E (Speculative) Crouch had the following children:

6i.Mildred Brown 19 was born in 1920/21 in Monroe County, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1930 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia.

4. Ada Blanche Brown 4,7,22-27 (Anna Maria Pack -1) was born on 15 May 1890 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She appeared in the census in 1940 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. She died on 20 Feb 1949 in Bluefield, Mercer, West Virginia. She was buried in Ballard, Monroe, West Virginia - Orchard Cem.

Ada's birth record doesn't give her mother's maiden name:

May 15, 1890; Brown, Ada B, b. Red Sulphur
Father: H C Brown, Mother A M Brown

Her death certificate tells us her operation didn't go well:

Ada B Martin, d. Feb 20 1949, St. Luke's Hospital, Bluefield, Mercer, WV
Residence: Orchard, Monroe, WV
Female, white, married
b. Dec 15., 1890, Orchard, WV
Father: Henry Brown
Mother: Anna Pack
Informant: C D Martin
Cause of death: ventricular fibulation die to operation for Bronchiectasis (destruction and widening of the large airways).

Find-a-Grave:

Ada B. Martin
Birth: 1890
Death: 1949

Orchard Cemetery, Ballard, Monroe, West Virginia

Ada Blanche Brown and Cephus Douthat Martin were married on 24 Jun 1912 in Monroe County, West Virginia. Cephus Douthat Martin 7,17,24,26,28-33 was born in 1886 in Mercer County, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1930 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1940 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He died on 28 Sep 1978 in Princeton, Mercer, West Virginia. He was buried in Ballard, Monroe, West Virginia - Orchard Cem.
Their marriage record:
Marriage: 24 Jan 1912, Monroe County, West Virginia
Cephus Donthat Martin, age 25, b. Mercer Co
Ada Blanche Brown, age 21, b. Monroe Co.

Cephus registered for the draft in 1918, which gave us another way to spell his name, Cephas Douthat Martin, and his exact birth date, 21 Mar 1886. Medium height, slender, brown hair, brown eyes.

1920, Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia

Martin, Cephus D, head, 33, WV, WV, Va, farmer
Martin, Ada, wife, 29, WV, WV, WV
Martin, Henry, son, 4 9/12, WV, WV, WV
Martin, Lee, son, 5/12, WV, WV, WV

Martin, Cife D, head, 44, WV, WV, Va
Martin, Ada, wife, 39, WV, Va, WV
Martin, Henry, son, 15, WV, WV, WV

Martin, Cefus D, head, 54, 8th grade, WV, farmer
Martin, Ada B, wife, 49, 8th grade, WV
Martin, Lee B, son, 20, 8th grade, WV

Cephus registered for the draft in 1942, giving us
Cephus Douthat Martin,
Birth: 21 Mar 1886, Mercer, West Virginia
Residence: Monroe, West Virginia

In 1953 he marries a widow, Tinnie Foley Ziglar:

Marriage: 4 May 1953, Mayodan, Rockingham, North Carolina

Groom: Cephus Douthat Martin
age 67, resides Orchard, WV

Bride: Tinnie Ziglar
age 57, resides Mayodan, NC

Find-a-Grave:

Cephus D. Martin
Birth: 1886
Death: 1978

Orchard Cemetery, Ballard, Monroe, West Virginia

SSDI:
Cephus Martin, 22 Mar 1886 - Sep 1978
LR: Ballard, Monroe, West Virginia
SSN issued: North Carolina or West Virginia (Before 1951)

The LDS PRF says he died 28 September 1978 in Princeton, Mercer, West Virginia. The month and year match the SSDI, and he may have been taken to a hospital there, as was Ada B Brown, his first wife. Ada Blanche Brown and Cephus Douthat Martin had the following children:

7i.Henry Martin 7,26 was born in 1914/15 in Monroe County, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia. He appeared in the census in 1930 in Red Sulphur District, Monroe, West Virginia.
