I began working on Isaac, but ran into a problem that nearly had me tearing out my greying hair. There were five Isaac Packards born in Bridgewater between 1795 and 1800. Trying to straighten them out was very trying, especially since it appeared that two of them had married women named Sally Packard. The gravestone transcriptions in Brockton VR were sometimes of little use, as they often showed no family relationship. I had about gotten to the point of suggesting that someone visit Coweeset Cemetery, and copy the groups of Packard gravestones to show family relationships, when inspiration struck. I recently downloaded a copy of Charles M. Thatcher, "Old Cemeteries of Southeastern Massachusetts: A Compilation of Records" (Middleborough, MA: Middleborough Public Library, 1995). You can download a (large - 24+ meg) PDF file of this book from the new Digital Library pages of the Middleborough Public Library:

One of the Brockton cemeteries that Thatcher transcribed was Coweeset, and although he arraged the surnames alpabetically, within each surname he listed the stones as he found them, in family groups. Thus on page 39, under PACKARD, we find Elijah's parents:

Capt. Nathan, died Feb. 17, 1798, aged 65 yrs.. (Rev. soldier).
Lydia, widow of Capt. Nathan, died Apr. 1, 1812, in her 71st yr..

followed by Elijah and Susanna's son with his family:

Elijah, died Mar. 29, 1871, aged 73 yrs., 9 mos..
Susan S., wife of Elijah & dau. of John & Abigail Baker, died at Worcester Apr. 7, 1842, aged 40 yrs..
George F., son of Elijah & Susan S., died at Worcester Apr. 4, 1843, aged 18 yrs..
Charles H., son of Elijah & Susan S., died Apr. 18, 1836, aged 7 yrs., 4 mos..
Susan M., dau. of Elijah & Susan S., died Oct. 8, 1847, aged 16 yrs..

followed by Elijah and Susanna with two more of their children:

Elijah, died Feb. 22, 1832, in his 66th yr..
Susanna, widow of Elijah, died Sept. 16, 1849, aged 78 yrs..
Isaac, died Apr. 29, 1828, aged 33 yrs..
Patience B., died July 1, 1830, aged 29 yrs..

and finally a fourth child of Elijah and Susanna with his family:

Nathan, died Mar. 11, 1840, aged 34 yrs..
Susan J., Relict of Nathan Packard & wife of John Harden, died Sept. 3, 1854, aged 51 yrs..
Susan C., dau. of Nathan & Susan, died June 16, 1840, aged 10 mos., 8 days.

The last two are on page 40. The surname on the gravestone of Susan J. (Baxter) (Packard) Harden is likely Harden, because the transcription of it was duplicated, with slightly different wording, on page 39 under HARDEN:

Susan J., wife of John & relict of Nathan Packard, died Sept. 3, 1854, aged 51 yrs..

just as Susan S. (Baker) Packard's stone is duplicated on page 38 under BAKER:

Susan S., dau. of John and Abigail and wife of Elijah Packard, died at Worcester Apr. 7, 1842, aged 40 yrs..

There is no trace of John Harden in the transcriptions.

One more child of Elijah and Susanna is found in the Coweeset transcriptions, on page 40 under SNELL:

Sophronia, wife of Elbridge, die [sic] Sept. 7, 1839, aged 31 yrs..

but Elbridge is not found
