Sandra, most of the Packards in the United States today are decended from Samuel Packard of Stonham Aspal in Suffolk Co., England. He arrived in Hingham, MA 10 August 1638 aboard the ship Diligent.
Samuel and his wife Elizabeth had many children a large number of whom survived and had numerous children of their own.
Among the feats of the various Packard offspring are the founding of universities and colleges, such as Tufts and Bowdoin, corporations such as Hewlett Packard and the Packard car company and a couple of newwspapers in the 19th century.
There is a dark side to the Packard past as well however, in the 1800s a number of scions of the Packard line were involved in anti-immigrant actions, and some rather nasty lynchings in Cheshire Co., NH.
On the brighter side, Packards have fought for their country in every conflict since King Phillip's War and served with distinction both in the armed forces and in civilian life.
If you want to know more, you can contact me, at the email address listed, or try Alan Packard in the Packard family association.
Good Luck
