Hi there: These Josephs' are a pesky lot, but I believe your Joseph to be a descendant of Samuel

Joseph PACKARD(2317) was born about 1689. He died in 1760. He has reference number [Sam1,Sam2,]. Parents: Ensign Samuel (2) PACKARD Ensign and Elizabeth LATHROP .

He was married to Mary D. WILLIS on 28 Nov 1723 in West Bridgewater, MA.(2318) (2319) Joseph Packard and Mary Willis were Married Nov 28th 1723 Children were: Mary (4) PACKARD , John (4) PACKARD, Joseph PACKARD.

Joseph PACKARD was born in 1725. Mitchell simply lists him as one of Joseph and Mary (Willis) Packard's children without birth date. He died in Easton, MA. (2313) The children's' baptismal dates are all recorded in West Bridgewater VR, pp 84-85, as found in First Church Records of Bridgewater, later the First Church in West Bridgewater. Parents: Joseph PACKARD and Mary D. WILLIS.

He was married to Abigail ALGER on 24 Nov 1748 in BRIDGEWATER, BRISTOL, MA.(2314) Children were: Daniel PACKARD, Anna PACKARD, Elijah PACKARD, Abigal PACKARD, Bethiah PACKARD, Martha PACKARD, Job PACKARD.

Confusion arises because, I believe, several of the town histories confused the two Josephs.

It is almost certain that the Joseph Packard (who is a descendant of John & Judith Winslow) and who married Sarah Johnson went early to Brookfield where records are extremely poor, but of which there is some mention of the two.

Further if you note the child naming patterns for Abigail and Joseph, they follow a more logical naming pattern for a marriage of Joseph and Abigail.

For a further discussion see http://www.mayflowerfamilies.com/cooke/d30.htm
(There are also other pages which discuss the issue)

Hope this presents some additional clues cj
