Thank you Gale for posting Alan PackardŐs obituary. He and his wife, Louise, have been personal friends of mine and my wife since we met them at the first reunion in 1988, held at Eureka Springs, Arkansas, of the Packards who organized the Packard and Allied Families Association (PAFA). Alan contributed comments to the Packard Genealogy Forum many times, but I had not seen any messages from him recently and wondered if he was in poor health. I did not know that he passed away this past January. ItŐs not as if we are close neighbors for we live in Massachusetts, a long way from Olathe, Kansas.

Alan was an early contributor, from 1987 on, to "PackardŐs Progress," the Packard and Allied Families newsletter and information exchange, begun by Jeri Packard Schlerf of Torrance, California. Alan became its editor and publisher with the seventeenth issue in February 1991. He continued that service for PAFA through issue no. 31 in August 1994. Dale Cook published issue no. 32 in February 1996. I became editor/publisher for issue no. 33 in February 1997 until issue no. 39 for Aug. and Nov. 1998 was finally distributed in September 1999 when publication ceased. Alan continued to contribute to "PackardŐs Progress" throughout this period. The final issue contained another of his tables of "Families Allied by Marriage to the Packard Family Through the Male Line." This last one to be published was for Packard wives whose maiden surname began with the letters N or O. This series of tables for A through O is basically a table of contents for AlanŐs collection of many notebooks of Packard Family Record Sheets.

Alan collected Packard Family Records for many years. He would write to any Packard whose name and address he came across in news articles, phone directories, etc. and send them a blank Family Record sheet with a request to fill it out and return it to him. My father received such a sheet about 1977. Alan worked in sales and management in the food industry in the Midwest from 1950 to his retirement in 1986. His business travels gave him opportunity to locate many Packards.

AlanŐs brother Karle is also a devotee of Packard genealogy and a founder of PAFA. Alan and Karle traced their Packard ancestry through the male line to Joseph Packard (abt 1705 Đ 1777) of Easton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, but have been unable to prove JosephŐs ancestral connection to Samuel Packard (abt 1612 Đ 1684) who came from England to Hingham, Mass., in August 1638. They did discover an ancestral line to Samuel via five generations of Randalls, the first and last of which married Packards. AlanŐs Packard ID in the notational system devised by Karle Packard and used in "PackardŐs Progress" is J312 221 2 for the line from Joseph Packard and is Sc12 1a2 221 2 for the line from the immigrant Samuel.

Unfortunately PAFA is inactive, its newsletter is no longer published, and no Packard reunions are scheduled. The interest in Packard genealogy is maintained by this Packard Family Genealogy Forum on the internet. I believe the family will make sure that AlanŐs collection of Packard genealogy data will be preserved and made available to others in the future and will serve as a lasting monument to AlanŐs tireless work in identifying both male and female lines of descent of Packards.
