George H. Packwood was the organizer of the Packwood Rifles. This company from St. Helena Parish and East Feliciana Parish joined the veterans of the 4th Louisiana Volunteers CSA in May 1862. This company was a replacement for the Beaver Creek Rifles. Packwood's company went into battle at Baton Rouge August 5,1862. They were then sent to Port Hudson. They left Port Hudson for Jackson MS where they fought at the Siege of Jackson. From there they went into winter quarters in Mobile. Their main campaigning came in the battle around Atlanta. In May 1864 they fought the battle Pickett's Mill, Then the battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Battle of Bald Hill and the Battle of Ezra Church. After Ezra Church they entered the trenches around Atlanta. On August 5th, Capt. Packwood with his company were on picket duty in front of the trenches. They were attacked by Union forces and surrounded. Fierce hand-to-hand fighting broke out. A total of 24 men were lost. Capt. Packwood was wounded and captured. He was sent to Johnson's Island, Sanduski, Ohio for the remainder of the war.
