Dear Kathy,
We're cousins! I'm so glad to hear from you! I have no information about where in Ireland the three brothers came from. My grandmother was Nellie Padden Smith, the daughter of Michael and Mary Shearan. I would love to hear more information about Mary, as well. Our branch of the family believes that she was a Mercer girl, coming to Seattle on Asa Mercer's second boatload of wives, and that she was a Civil War widow, leaving two sons behind in Pennsylvania. Nellie was very fond of her step-mother, your grandmother, Annie. She married John Smith, and Irishman from Manchester, England, and they had 5 children, Frank, William, Alice, Mae(my mother) and Margaret. John deserted Nellie when she was pregnant with Margaret, and all the children except Alice and Mae were adopted out. Margaret is still alive at 88 in Denver. Her son, Gary Buckman, lives in Aberdeen.

I live in Seattle at 7359 23rd N.W. 98117.
Phone 206-784-1894.

Thank you for sharing your information. I have been planning to travel to Bellingham to look for information in the Museum, but maybe a trip to see you would be mor helpful.

Cindy Gilbrough
