Peden/Paden Y-DNA Surname Project

Several months ago we initiated a Peden Surname Project through Family Tree DNA. This is a Y-DNA test for males that carry the Peden/Paden or various other spellings of the name. Only males carry the Y chromosome and it is passed directly from father to son in an unbroken line over the centuries. It is thus possible to determine relationships of various families with the same or similar surname. Documentation is totally lacking in being able to link the various Peden/Paden families but this Y-DNA test is able to sort out which groups are related and approximately how far back. For example, are the Peden/Padens that settled in colonial Pennsylvania related to the Peden/Paden family of South Carolina? Are the Pedens that settled in Isle of Wight Co., VA related to the Pedens that came to VA/KY in about 1775? Are the Pedens in Canada related to the Pedens in the US?

We have had 9 participants to date. Results have been received for 5 of the participants and we expect the other 4 in the very near future. The initial results can be viewed at
www.familytreedna.com/public/peden/

We are in hopes that descendants from other Peden/Paden families will join in this effort. There is limited cost share funds available for lines that have not been tested yet. Please contact me for information or to answer any questions.
