Sorry, but I just had to join the discussion. Four guys and none has the original story. True, Padillas are named for being from the towns of Padilla and true, padilla does mean "a baker's paddle", but the story goes that the name was originally awarded, with the coat of arms bearing paddles and lunar crescents, symbolic of serving against the moors, to the first Padilla, whoever that may be, for his bravery in beating back the Moors from a castle by using the baker's paddle as a weapon, which he had picked up while in the kitchen.
