FLASHBACK, by Richard Obert

Sports: Karl Pagel, Washington, 1973

He was the first in a line of five Pagel boys who starred in football, basketball and baseball at Washington High in the 1970s. Karl is the oldest, but he prefers to call himself "the most experienced."

He was quarterback of the football team, point guard on the basketball team and pitcher on the baseball team, capping his prep career in '73 with three no-hitters and a 9-4 record.

Pagel said Brigham Young recruited him to play quarterback, but "I didn't think I was ready to leave home."

Pagel became a second-team, junior college All-America punter at Glendale Community College and was ready to try the position at the University of Texas until he saw against whom he was competing for the job -- Russell Erxleben, who later punted for the New Orleans Saints.

"I looked at it and said, 'I might be better suited to play baseball,'" Pagel said.

Pagel played one year in the outfield for the Longhorns before signing with the Chicago Cubs in '76. He got a couple of September call-ups with the Cubs in '78 and '79, and, after being traded to the Cleveland Indians, spent parts of the next three seasons in the big leagues before being released.

Pagel said the Indians wanted him to coach in their farm system, but, tired of the traveling, he began working as a United Parcel Service driver in the Valley in 1985, something the 46-year-old Gilbert resident still does.

Pagel occasionally helps youngest brother Ross work with his Mesa Westwood baseball players.

Ross and Karl are the only two of Tom Pagel's five sons who still reside in the Valley. Bruce, a year behind Karl, is a city manager in Florida. Mike, a former Arizona State and NFL quarterback, lives outside Cleveland. Rick, Ross'
twin and a 1980 Washington grad, played lineman for Navy and is a Marine lieutenant in Germany.
