Hi Catherine
At the moment, I'm looking at Pagets to see if there is a link with my Williams family of Newborough. My late aunt brought me up on a tale (she mentioned it on every Anglesey holiday!) that we were descended from the Paget commemorated on the Marquess of Anglesey column.
I don't know if this is true or not, but the marquess had 17 children and 73 grandchildren, probably in the early 1800s. I have traced my Williamses back to 1859.
I'm told that the Pagets could trace ancestry back to the Conqueror himself, so a link, however unlikely, would be a coup!
Two weeks ago, I would have said I wasn't interested in Gills, but they have just appeared in my wife's North Yorks tree with the marriage of a Jane Gill to a George Jackson, probably in the 1820s. She would be Liz's GGG grandmother.
My point with regard to your chap was that if he was given the name Paget in honour of a Waterloo link, he would have been about 15 at the time, and may have assumed the name.
Have fun
Will
