Hello cousin-My ancestor Adam Painter one of the Painter Indian captives, (the son who returned with his mother and two of his sisters lived in Culpeper County, Virginia until the 1780s after which he moved to what is now Washington County, Tenn, where he was among the first taxpayers. He had a son Hezekiel who was baptised in 1776 at the Hebron Lutheran Church (Oldest continous congregation in U.S.) with his father Adam (Bender)Painter and wife Demilia,Broyles and Carpenters witnesses.
Moving with Adam Painter from Culpeper area were the Broyles, Wilhoits ,and several other German families .
I "think " when the mention of Michael Copple and his wife Mary Painter Copple moving fron Virginia to the West in the early stories the author meant across the mountains to the new settlements that were in what is know Tennessee. The frontier in the 1780s as you know was small.
I would sure like to contact descendants of the Painter girls that stayed with the Indians -their off spring were probably in the Shawnee and Cherokee tribes and no telling how many others and possible they could have carried down the Bender name instead of the Painter version. Interesting stuff.
