Painter -Dekalb Co. Ala- Burke Co. N.C. Dilemma
I have been researching for over 40 years and have been looking for the surname of my ggg-grandmother Chaney b. 1795 in Burke County, North Carolina. The only person that I could ever find that had a daughter named Chaney was Henry Painter who was in Burke County listed as Henry Panter on the 1800 Census and is on the 1810 Burke Co. Census living a couple of doors away from Samuel Painter. I have seen the research that Henry married a Margaret Wakefield had a daughter Chaney(born before 1800) and three sons and moved to Wabash County, Illinois, but all of the info says that Chaney is an unknown.
My Chaney married John Stepp in Burke County about
1811 when she was 16. He was a neighbor of Henry Painter's.
John and Chaney migrated west through Gwinnett Co. Ga. where John Stepp died in 1845 and then on to St. Clair an DeKalb Co. Al. Chaney is on the St Clair Co. Census in 1850 and 1860 and died there in1865. Many of her descendants live in DeKalb Co. around the Geraldine, Crossville area. My dad grew up in Geraldine and had many friends with the last name Painter.
Now this is where my story gets really confusing. My dad is an administrator for a few surname projects on FamilyTree DNA and has taken every DNA test possible. Just recently he had a family finder match for a person descended from a Richard Painter through his son John Painter and wife Charlotte Ivyas a4th/5th cousin. This would mean that he would have a Painter ancestor in common with this person as a gggg-grandparent, which would be a sibling of Richard or Richards father. This persons family came from Dekalb, Al.
There is another Jacob Painter b. 1772 from Lincoln County N.C. that lived in Dekalb Co. Al. in 1850 and died that year and was buried in St. Clair County, that is supposed to be related to Henry.
Are the families of Richard Painter b.1746 and the family of Henry Painter b.1772 related??? If my ggg-grandmother Chaney is Henry'sdaughter then they would have to be.
I am really confused and hope that a Painter researcher can help clear up the connection to these families....Or perhaps my dad's DNA match has found a connection that was not previously known. Thanks for any help!!
