hi. i am also looking for information on my great-grandfather who was also named john (johann) pakkala. i beleive he came from finland in the late 1800's but settled in the houghton hancock area. i know he was in the russian turkish war of 1877 and received the iron cross of bravery. he worked in the copper mines as did his sons. my grandfather was alex and he had several brothers who also settled in the houghton hancock area. great grandfater john died in 1913 after being found frozen to death in hurontown. i may not have been much or any help but have done alot of research on the family. feel free to email me at sudslinkk@aol.com.

thanks,
stan pakkala
