Hi Stan, I don't believe you are related to the John (Jussi) Pakkala I have spoken of. With the help of a lady in Ste. Sault Marie, MI, we have been able to put my Finnish friend in touch with cousins of his here in the U.S., and he is delighted. His John Pakkala came to the U.S. about 1905, and I have learned he is not related to my husband and his line. John Pakkala had been born John Popoff and changed his last name as a young adult. So, my inital reason for going onto Genforum has been answered. As to my husband's Pakkala line -- his grandfather Arvid came to the U.S. in 1890 and ultimately made his way out to the State of Washington. He also had a brother August who came about the same time who changed his last name to Erickson (Why did they do that?; to confuse genealogists, I'm sure!!) and settled in northeastern Washington State. Those Pakkala brothers came from Tornio or as some of my records say: Alatornio. Their father's name was Johan Erik (or Erikinpoika) Pakkala who married Maria Katarina Lemke in Tornio in September 1853. Perhaps you are related to my husband along this line somewhere.
