Dear Mrs. Palcich,

sorry for not replying for such a long time.
I have neglected the Genforum.

The family name appears on the island of Pag during the late 14th/early 15th century. And it has been documented on the island at that time.

It also appears that Palčić s originate (on the island of Pag) in another Family i.e. Grbin (apparantly, one of them had a nickname Palac - Thumb)
if that is the true, then Palcics on Pag are not settlers from another area but rather family that appeared in Pag.

That does not mean, of course, that the same name could not have came into being somewhere else as well. The actual mechanism of transforming someones nickname into surnema would, i guess, be the same.

On the other hand, 15th century has been a time of the Turkish expansion with large numbers of refugees fleeing in front of them and roughly following the path which is generally shaped like nowdays Croatia. Turks caused fear and lot of people escaped their homes in front of them. Although Turks never occupied Pag, they were there, within a half a day ride on a horseback. It is possible that some of the Palcichs decded to try their luck further north in Mountinous areas Gorski kotar (CRO) Loz valey (SLO) and area around Zagreb.

And, yes, there was anothher reason for fleeing Pag - clashes with Zadar (a more powerfull town 30 miles from Pag)

Jakov Palčić
