Not sure if there is any connection, but a Gilbert Palen lived in or near Allegany or Limestone, Cattaraugus County, New York during the American Civil War. The family operated a tannery in Limestone, which is just north of Bradford, PA. I believe the Palens in this area at the time were of Dutch extraction, from around Palenville, Greene County, New York. No relation to me.
