Hi, Bob,
My ancestors the Palen's were from Harlange, Luxembourg. I believe the surname to be German and French, because their were only German, French, and Luxembourgers. My 3-Greats Grandfather,Josef Palen, was born in 1781 in Harlange [Harlingen], Luxembourg, his five sons emigrated in 1862 to Caledonia, Houston county, Minnesota. Josef Palen Sr. died in 1865, in Harlange, Luxembourg. Hope that helps. Good luck in your research.
