This is interesting. I have several candidates for Daniel's parents, and one is Isaac Baldwin and Elizabeth Shadduck. This Daniel had a brother named Isaac.
One of few early sources I have is from the "Biographical Record of Hamilton County," (Iowa), published in 1912. The information talks about our ancestor going to Canada for a while. Some of it appears incorrect, but it is the oldest source we have:
"...Gilbert Baldwin, a native of Dutchess county, New York. His father, Daniel Baldwin, came from England to America, while the wife of Daniel Baldwin belonged to an early Dutch family by the name of Paley, that settled on the Hudson...(Daniel) had been drafted in the English army, but Gilbert took his place, his sympathies, however, being with the American cause. In the second war with England he had opportunity to manifest his loyalty to the United States, taking part in the war of 1812 and being present at the surrender at Detroit. At the expiration of his term of service he removed to New York. Later he went to Canada but subsequently returning to this country, settling in Ohio, where he married in 1829..."
