Hi Margaret
Since posting the message I have heard from the OPC for Ipplepen. Mary Jane Palk was born in 1811, the daughter of Arthur Palk(3) and his wife Mary. In 1851 she was a house servant for a solicitor in Berry Pomeroy near Totnes Devon. She married a Thomas Kerslake, a servant in the same house, at Exeter in 1851. He was born at Woodbury, Devon in 1824. As far as I know there was only one child Emily Mary Beatrice Palk Kerslake born at Plymouth in 1852. In the 1881 Census she is described as 'Formerlya hotel keeeper. In the 1891 census she is living with her daughter an son in law Ernest Augustus Oram at 74 Durnford Street Stonehouse. She is described as 'living on her own means'.
Arthur Palk (3)was the son of Arthur Palk(2) and Susan Geaves. They married at Ipplepen in 1765. Arthur Palk (2) was the son of Arthur Palk (1) and Jane.
Apart from the census entries and the register of births and marriages post 1837 I have not checked any of this but I have no reason to doubt it.
My new email address is [email protected].
