If you are looking for information on Swedes born in Sweden, also post on the Sweden forum. Type Sweden into the "Jump to Forum" space at the top right of this page.

I also suggest that you contact the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center. They have a website which you can google, but their extensive collection of records is NOT online. We need to go there to research or pay them to research for us. Many of us have found the parish of birth and much more (including information in the U.S. up to about 1930). Many of us have been helped by this fantastic archive. They have records which are difficult or even impossible to find elsewhere.

I guess this is where you learned that "Frank" came from Kalmar. Unfortunately, there is no parish name listed. This comes from the Emihamn database, which was made from registrations with Swedish port police before leaving Sweden.

First name: FRANS
Last name: PALMQVIST
Age: 23 Gender: M
Parish: County: H (Kalmar)
Port: GÖTEBORG
Date: 1882 02 24
Destination: CHICAGO
Fellows: NEJ
Source: 19:157:3336

He is not listed on a database called Emibas, made from registrations with the Swedish parish to go to a foreign country. It is about 75% complete.

Perhaps he was this person found on the 1880 Swedish Census CD.

Record 1880-8-45-1043

Palmqvist, Frans August
Smed = blacksmith

b. 1859 in Kristvalla (Kalmar län, Småland)

Man, single

Trangärde
Förlösa (Kalmar län, Småland)

Place of birth (in the database): Kristvalla Kalmar län

Now you have parishes to work with. The main source in Swedish genealogy is the parish record. Parishes listed above are Kristvalla (his parish of birth) and Förlösa (where he was living when he left Sweden).

Maybe this is the same Oscar who was present at his funeral but this is only a guess.

Emihamn database:

First name: OSCAR EMIL
Last name: PALMQVIST
Age: 21 Gender: M
Parish: PELARNE County: H (Kalmar)
Port: GÖTEBORG
Date: 1891 03 13
Destination: NEW YORK
Fellows: NEJ
Source: 44:247:5323

This is Oscar Emil on the Emibas CD.

I don't find John using your information when I check Emibas or Emihamn. I do see this possibility on the 1880 Swedish Census CD, but this last name of Palmqvist is NOT rare. (Also, MOST of our ancestors left Sweden with a patronymic last name (ends with son or dotter) and only later took a surname such as Palmqvist or Palm. Swedes LOVE to change names, by the way.)

Scans of the handwritten birth records are online, for a fee, on three services. I checked Genline to see the birthdate of Carl Johan, but it wasn't 26 March. The above Carl Johan was born 1 August 1861.

Your best bet is to use the Swenson Center unless you want to just guess and perhaps end up researching incorrect lines. (I assume you've already used censuses, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage APPLICATIONS, and so forth.)
