This is at some variance at what my files
show for Johann Jacob Cuntz/Kuntz, Sr.:
"In Niederbronn, Bas Rhin, Alsace,
France, he was a shoemaker.

Arrived in America in Phila from
Rotterdam on ship "Charming Nancy" on
Nov 9 1738. His wife, Anna Margaretha
Pfalzgraf, died at sea. Of the 412
passengers on that ship, 250 died! The
story is written in Annette Burgert's
"Eighteenth Century Immigrants from the
Northern Alsace". Also a writeup in "The
Palatine Immigrant", Winter 1990/91, page
180, incl a sketch of the ship.

(It is noted that a different Johan Jacob
Kuntz, with Lorentz Kuntz, arrived in
America on the ship "Johnson" from
Rotterdam and Deal, England, on Sep 19
1732.)

John Jacob Kuntz, shortly after his arrival,
followed the Schuylkill River north to the
Perkiomen Creek, as did a number of
others before him, and settled in what
afterwards became Berks County. In the
Journal of Proprietary Land Office, under
date of March 3rd, 1739, is this entry:
"Hans Jacob Kuhns, received in part for
land in Colebrookdate, Five Pounds."

Settled in Colbrooksdale, Oley Hills area,
of Berks Co. He was an elder of the St.
Josephs Oley Hills Church, Pike Twp, in
which his birth date of 19 Feb 1692 is
noted. Those records show that he was a
dental surgeon and tartar (remover?). A far
cry from making shoes!

The records of the Oley Hill Ch., on LDS
Film # 0941100, state that this Johann
Jacob Kuntz, son of Johan George Kuntz,
married Anna Catharina Muller, daughter
of Johann Jacob Muller, in 1719. This
appears to be in error: Anna Catharina
Muller married Johannes George Kuntz,
born 1665/1655; their son married Anna
Margaretha Pfalzgraf.

After he arrived in America, he married
Susanna Klein, a widow whose husband
had died at sea, probably on the same
ship, and had four more children. Per
Albert Kunkel and Marvin Koontz.

MONUMENT ERECTED
A granite boulder of respectable
dimensions, finished in simple style, was
erected over the graves of our worthy
forefather and his two wives, in the
extreme northwest corner of the St. Paul's
(Union Lutheran and Reformed) Church, at
Indianland, in the summer of 1929. The
funds were contributed by descendants of
the venerable Father Bernhard Kuntz and
dedicated to his memory and that of his
family, in loving kindness and with
appropriate simple ceremony on the
occasion of the Sixth Annual Reunion of
the Kuntz Family, held at that revered
place, Sunday, July 24, 1929.

Ancestor of Lee K. Wolfer and Marvin
Koontz ."

Anna Margaretha's death at sea is quite
well documented. "According to several
records, including those of the Oley Hill
Church, Berks County, Anna Margaretha
Pfalzgraf died at sea on the voyage to
America with her husband, Johann Jacob
Kuntz, in 1738; she died in childbirth with
an unnamed child.

The Alsatian (France) records show that all
of Johann Jacob Kuntz's children were
born in Neiderbronn, Alsace, France, just
over the border from Germany."

I'd be glad to talk with you about this.

Mr. Brobst was kind enough to post this inorder to eliminate the confusion in my mind from an assortment of data I had about
Anna Margaretha Pfaltzgraff.

I do believe that she was an older sister of our George the Immigrant because of the dates involved, because they lived within
ten miles of each other and the families were well acquainted with each other.

If this is so, then our George's father was also Johan Jacob Pfalzgraf of Niederbronn, bas-rhin, Alsace, France.
