I am researching my husbands family and have really just begun work on this particular line.
Mary Smith died in Campbell County, Virginia on June 1, 1878, cause "killed by horse" Consort of James W. Smith. Parents are listed as JAMES and MARY PAMPLIN, and place of birth is named as Campbell County, age 71. (Campbell County Death Register).
The following two articles concerning her death are from the Lynchburg Daily News:
June 3, 1878
Violent Death: Mrs. Mary Smith an old lady, was thrown from a wagon on Saturday, about five miles below the city, and almost instantly killed. She was about seventy-one years of age, and is represented to have been a lady of expemplary character.
June 7, 1878
A Lady Killed: The Amherst Enterprise says: "Col. C.B. Christian informs us that a pair of horses attached to the carriage of Mrs. Buck Smith, who lived near the combined locks, ran off a few days ago, breaking the carriage, and killing Mrs. Smith. The unfortunate lady was horribly mangled; Col. Christian says that she was almost torn to pieces."

I have not been able to locate the marriage record for Mary Pamplin and James W. Smith at this point. I have been able to collect the following census information:

1850 Campbell County Lynchburg
1357/1357 James Smith 37 Lockkeeper
Mary Smith 37
George A. 10
Jno.? 9
William A. 8
Alice 7
Patrick A. 5
Mary 2

1860 Campbell County Eastern District
431/441 James M. Smith 47 Lockkeeper
Mary 53 Keeping House
William A. 18 Laborer
Alice V. 17 Domestic
Pat. H. 14
Mary E. 12

1870 Campbell County Eastern District
508/551 Smith, James M. 58 Farmer
Mary 64 Keeping House

In the 1870 Census, on either side of Mary Pamplin Smith and her husband James at are apparent family members. On one side is her daughter Mary Emily and husband William Lampie and Willie Lampie, William's son from his first marriage (the name on the census is spelled Lampy). On the other side is a Patrick Pamplin, age 54, who is a watchman at the bridge. I belive this is the brother of Mary. There is a Jane Pamplin age 24, and William Pamplin age 7 who are living with Patrick.
I can also find a Patrick Pamplin, age 34 in the 1850 Census in Campbell County who list occupation as Boatman. I also can find on Patrick Pamplin, age 44 In Virginia in 1860 in Henrico County, occupation is listed as overseerer.

If anyone can provide any insight into the parents of this Mary PAMPLIN Smith born in Campbell County, Virginia about 1807, I would love to hear from you.
