V.W. Panton, South Elgin, Ill. fire, 1901
St.Charles (Illinois) Chronicle, Oct. 4, 1901 -- Current in Kane County --
The large stone grist mill, the property of V.W. Panton, located at South Elgin, on the west side of the Fox river, was gutted by fire last week Friday morning. The first, which started on the second floor in a pile of corn cobs, was of incendiary origin. Panton, who is president of the South Elgin village board, and who recently prosecuted a South Elgin saloon keeper, declares that fire fiends applied the torch to his property. Although he mentioned no names and made no direct charges, it was evident from his conversation that his political enemies will not escape censure. The loss to the property was complete. Panton carried $2,000 insurance. (Posted as a courtesy, not related.)
