Denis PAPINEAU & young family Montreal, 1881
Posted by: Edmond Spaeth (ID *****6935) Date: June 16, 2003 at 07:16:29

I am not related to any of these persons, however having French-Canadian ancestry on my maternal side, I found a query on the New York State GenForum intriguing and attempted to find some information regarding the ancestral families mentioned.

Here's what I discovered about the PAPINEAU family at the LDS Church website and in particular the 1881 Canadian Census

The following PAPINEAUs were listed at the Hotel owned by Charles LARIN, M, male, French, 54, Quebec, hotel keeper, RCath. There were many other persons listed as well for this particular enumeration but I only include the PAPINEAUs

Denis PAPINEAU, W, male, French, 28, Quebec, agent, RCath
Hortense PAPINEAU, female, French, 3, Quebec, RCath
Jules PAPINEAU, male, French, 6, Quebec, RCath
as you can see Denis was a widower with 2 small children including your Hortense.

The census documentation follows:
Census Place: Ste-Anne Ward, Montreal, Montreal, Quebec
FH Library film: 1375853
NA Film # C-13217
District:90 sub-district: A
Division: 10 Page #:5 Family #: 29
