I visited two cemeteries on Saturday, March 02 ... Took some pictures and can email them as attachments to folks who request. My wife descends from James Wilson Parchman via his daughter, Georgia Ann Parchman (who died in 1950) ... James Wilson Parchman was married to Emily Elizabeth "Betty" Cooksey.. The marker in the cemetery where they are buried (at the intersection of Hwys 13 and 46) shows their birth and death dates as 1824-1916 (Wilson) and 1832-1914 (Betty) ... BOTH ARE WRONG ... We have a copy of Betty's death certificate - she was born 18 Jul 1838 and died 21 Dec 1914 ... James W Parchman was born 20 Jun 1834 and he died in 1916 - we have not been able to find a death certificate for him ... One of their sons (Jesse Milton Parchman and his wife Susie Edlin) - and one of their daughters (Francis G. Parchman and her husband Milton Cary) are likewise buried in the same cemetery as their parents - no photo of Francis' tombstone.
The other cemetery, about two miles away on Pete Parchman's farm, are markers for several other Parchmans: Buried here is John Parchman 1770-1832 .. and Margaret ... This is a new marker and I am not sure who put it up and how accurate it is ...
There is a marker for a Lillian Ophelia Edwards, wife of J.M. Parchman ,,, Jan 9 1856 to July 17 1876 - At this point, I do not know who this is.
One of the photos I took was the tombstone of Arcada J. (??) Parchman born 9 Oct 1816 - died 1 May 1889 and husband Jesse Parchman who was born 26 Nov 1812 ... This is a very old tombstone. My conclusion, Arcada died before Jesse because there is no death date on this tombstone for him .. We have to assume he is buried there.
Another interesting marker, Nancy, wife of J.F. Gentry born Nov 15, 1828 died Feb 11 1859. In the 1850 census in the household of a Jefferson Gentry (Stewart County) is Leonard Parchman who is listed as age 34 - I assume this is John and Margaret's son who married Nancy Dowdy in 1844 - there is also a 4 year old boy named John (I assume Parchman, as he is listed after Leonard) ... Also, listed in this household is Nancy MANN who is 34. John and Margaret had a daughter named Nancy who has been reported as marrying a Joel Mann. I need to get to the library and to review the microfilm on this situation.
In the top left corner of this fenced in small cemetery, is the top of two tombstones that appear to be very old and they have actually sunk into the ground so that only about 6" is showing !!! .. I have a brother in law who lives close by and he said he would dig them up when the ground gets dry to see who is buried there and then he will reset the markers .. That will be interesting ... Who knows, perhaps it is another son or daugther of John and Margaret ?
