Paula,

Is there any chance that your Paul had a sister, Mary (or Maria), b. 3/2/1851 in Controne, Salerno, Italy? Mary came to the U.S. about 1887, as Mary Verne. I believe Verne's name was Anthony and that he died in Italy before Mary came to New York City with her son, Nicholas, Verne. They all ended up in Jefferson County, N. Y. having gone there in about 1910.

The spelling of the name on Mary's death certificate shows her maiden name spelled as Parella, but I have always questioned the spelling, which, of course, was given to the coroner by family who may not have known the correct spelling.
