Ms. Winters,
After reviewing more closely the provenance of my information on Elisha Budd's will (dated 1765), I see that all sources I have at hand stem from the Budd genealogy Robert Bolton provides in his "History of Westchester County" (1st ed.[1848], p. 509). Here Bolton cites the source of his information for Elisha Budd as his will recorded in the Surrogates Court of New York; Bolton, in his outline, gives only surnames for the husbands of Elisha's daughters, Sarah and Anne, i.e., Purdy and Brown, respectively. "Phoebe" is listed by Bolton as if not having been married at the time of the writing of the will. The Budd genealogy in Baird's "History of Rye" (1870) parrots Bolton's treatment of Elisha Budd with the exception of adding the given name "Hacahliah" to Sarah's husband (thus Hachaliah Purdy). Therefore, most who came after these two, and necessarily relied heavily on them, carried on an Elisha Budd genealogy without his daughter Pheobe indicated as having married, based solely on Bolton's reading of Elisha's will, which, from what you have said (having seen in one of your postings that includes an extract of what appears to be the Elisha Budd will as it was transcribed into NY Surrogate Court records, and not a NYHS abstract), appears likely to be shoddy work. In comparing Bolton's Budd genealogy with Budd will abstracts in Pelletreau's "Early Wills of Westchester County," I find numerous errors of omission, which supports that Bolton could very likely have missed Pheobe's being married to a Theall, something that appears evident from what you have said is written in Elisha's will.
Being the eternal skeptic when it comes to genealogy I still need to see Elisha Budd's will for myself (in a couple of days I'll see the NYHS abstract which should be enough proof for now in addition to what you have provided). Then I'll ponder Thealls who could have possibly married Phebe. At first glance I'm leaning toward the sons of Hachaliah Theall, either Gilbert or John, but I don't like to be hasty in trying to figure this out. It will probably come down to an educated guess based on untangling the Gilbert Theall will of Feb. 6, 1823 wherein he mentions a "nephew" and "niece" with "Budd" as their middle name.
There is a sole mention of an Elisha Theall in Rye Town records in 1796; an Elisha Theall is listed in NYC Directories from 1800 to 1815; there is no record of an Elisha Theall in US Censuses for New York State from 1790 to 1820; and the funeral, at Rye, NY, of the wife of Mr. Elisha Theal of New York City is recorded in "Vital Records of Christ’s Church at Rye, Westchester County, New York," NYGBR, vol. 38, no. 3, p. 211, as follows:
1811, Sept. 14 - Funeral of “Mrs. Theal, the wife of Elisha Theal of New York.”
Thus, there is support for Pheobe, daughter of Elisha Budd, marrying a Theall. I just hope that it is Elisha's will that provides the foundation for a relationship, not somebody working back from the existence of an Elisha Theall to supposing he must be a descendant of an Elisha and conveniently assigning Phebe, daughter of Elisha Budd, as the mother. I hope you get my drift, and are not put off by my skepticism.
Tell me more about your Elisha Budd 1765 will. Post it in full if you can.
