Ifyou haven't yet, I'd rather formulate it a little different when I talk to Richard. He's my mom's...second? cousin. I'd rather have a better alternative story when I present it to him; the Parkerson family pages seem rather fond of James. I'm thinking James was basically correct in what he said: Prudence's Cook family did leave Tennessee, go to Missouri and then to Arkansas around the same years James said his family did. He very well may have fought in the Black Hawk War; I haven't sought proof yet. If he left Arkansas circa the time of his last child being born to Prudence he may have gone to California, but I doubt it. It makes sense he lied about her death in the interview if he was trying to garner sympathy. His daughter Catherine was born around the time he claimed (only once) to be married to Almedia in Texas in 1861, the same time he would have claimed to be returning from California AND in the Civil War, so that marriage could be real though I have no proof. So, say the family stories are true and he ran from Arkansas...that all fits about right. I think he just when from Arkansas to Texas. His second daughter Sarah was certainly born to Mahala. He was just a horrible liar about his age and old-age activities. I sincerely doubt he was really an Indian fighter at his age, and if so, why would they have killed 700 horses with the Indians they slaughtered? Glad you noticed too that his first wife was Indian. The Civil War thing is almost certainly just to get attention and sympathy when he as broke. Definitely not an admirable guy no matter what. I just don't get why no one questions the 117 years old thing when he gained more years with every census, and only stated once that he was born in 1793.
