According to the US Department of the Interior, the Liberty Bell was made by John Pass who was a native of Malta. He changed his name from Giovanni Pace when he moved to Pennsylvania. He also owned an iron foundry at Mt. Holly, NJ. This comes from a letter written in 1987. You might learn more by writing:

I recently came across a reference quoted from a book on the history of Hall County, Georgia. No sources were given and I don't know how reliable it is. But the gist of the story is that there were four Pass brothers who left Ireland, two went to what would be the US, one to what would be Canada and one to Malta.

My family has been traced to Virginia in the 1730's so there is no relation between us and Giovanni unless this story is true.
