William, thanks for your reply. I don't think anyone will ever know for sure. So many people were almost illiterate in those days and couldn't spell very well, but maybe they wanted N. Franklin to be distinquished from other Nathaniels in the family of the same name. One of my great aunts said she thought the N. stood for Nathaniel but another one who contacted a Pass Aunt of her who still lived near Little River TX that the name was just N. Franklin Pass. That was way back in 1966 when I was just starting to do the family history.
When my gr grandmother died, her son Jess Shaw spelled her maiden name as Poss on her death certificate. Some people have even mistakenly thought the name was Price.
I am the gr granddaughter of of Elizabeth Jane Pass who married James Perry Shaw. All of the members of their children's generation are gone now, and there are only a few people of my father's generation left. Now the people of my generation are going too. I am 61.
I getting ready to sell my house and plan to RV full time for a year before moving to an over 55 community. I hope I can go to Jones CO, where N. Franklin is buried as well as to Bell CO where the Passes moved to from TX and AK. I was in Munday TX for a short time in 1981, but was very rushed. I should be able to take all the time I want this time
How are we related exactly? We just be about 4th or 5th cousins. I live in Tacoma WA. Do you still live in TX?
Thank you again. Peggy Shaw
