I can only speculate. Nathaniel Pass, Sr., moved from Halifax County, Va., to Caswell County, NC about 1780. Elijah H. is not in my reference book, Bill Hammond's "Some Descendants fo Nathaniel Pass." But Bill did not have any children listed for Nathaniel's son, Nathaniel, Jr. Does Elijah's initial stand for Holloway? Nat, Sr. married a Holloway and the name stayed in the Pass family for generations. His son John (b. 1785-90?)lived in Person County at the time of the 1850 census. His son Thomas, through whom I am descended, was married in Person County. (There are other Passes in NC who are not descended from Nat, Sr. but likely from his brother(s).)
