Thank you for taking the time out and responding to my posting! I was doing research for Gootman's 3rd great grandson. It is most likely his mother who is in the cousin of your friend, for she has asked her son to have me look into her family for her for I have been doing genealogy research for over 20 years. This cousin lives in Southern California (where we also live).
I have connected eight of the names you have to Gootman. I am so curious if any of the others fit in to this line? Doing a search on "Pass" in the English census brough up a great deal of them.
Here are the names I have and your information confirms where they were born (I had Edinburgh for some - but I belive that one or two of the son's USA World War I Registration Cards have Glasgow - have to confirm):
Bessie Pass - Her USA Social Security (SSDI) or Calif. Death Index (CDI) record has her born Mar. 10, 1895 and died Apr. 25, 1978.
Israel Morris Pass - SSDI/CDI 08/02/1896 - 07/07/1880
Solomon Pass
George Pass
Rosa Pass - SSDI/CDI 11/26/1897 - 08/17/1964
Gootman Pass - SSDI/CDI under Douglas Gootman Pass 07/03/1899 - 06/1980
Kate Pass
Theodore Pass - I located a Theodore Pass in St. Louis, Missourri who "may" be him but not I am not positive, need ot check to see if he did indeed reside in the State of MO. SSDI 03/07/1901 - 11/1969 in ST. Louis, MO
I located the family in the 1901 census for Gateshead, Durham, England:
Israel Pass, age 37, born in Russia "Bch N Subject", Drapery Salemsan, Own Account.
Annie Pass, age 29, born in Russia "Bch N Subject"
Bessie Pass, age 6, born in Scotland
Morris Pass, age 5, born in Scotland
Rosa Pass, age 3, born in Scotland
Douglass Pass, age 1, born in Scotland
Maurice Harris, age 25,born in Russia "Bch N Subject", Drapery Salemsan (not sure the connection, perhaps a relative of some sort??). Could this be Annie's brother and he changed his name from Ess to Harris?
Also in Durham in the same census year is Chya (Bernstein) Pass who is going by "Anna" and listed as Mother in Law born in Russia. She is residing with Simeon Aaron Matthew and his wife Rina Mathews. Residing in the same house is J. Mathews, mother of Simeon (born in Russia); Frank Sharrock (no relationship listed but probably related to the husband of Millie Matthews husband B. Shrock - Millie being the daughter of Sophia Pass) who is from Russia and is a Carpenter/Joiner age 20; Jane Harvey, domestic servant, age 50, born in Cumberland/Alston? and is deaf.
This family is living at 127-A 22 Murton St., living at 127 22 Murton St. is a large assortment of people headed by Moses Matthews age 45, a butcher, born in Russia and his wife Sophia age 46. born is Russia. This is Chya "Anna" Pass's daughter - so Chya is actually the mother in law to Moses Matthew and not Simeon Matthews. I am thinking that 127 and 127-A is all one building and 127-A is simply a part of this building such as an apartment or even a small home on the same property??
I was able to view the 1901 census records on Ancestry.com.
I would like any additional information on this family. I do not have a relationship with my partner's mother, who is most likely the one looking into this family; however, just this week I did send an e-mail to my partner to send on to his mother.
I would also like to know how this family ended up in Australia and So. Africa and Canada. And were Gootman Pass died?
