My gggrandfather was ABNER PACE (b.abt. 1821 in NC, probably in Guilford Co., NC). In 1837 he was apprenticed as an orphan in Guilford NC. In 1843 he married JULIA ANN REED (b.1825)in Guilford NC. On his marriage license, the spelling PASE was used. He named his only child JOHN FLETCHER PACE, and Pace has been the name used in the family ever since. I don't know whether the PASE was a misspelling or not. I was struck by the name combinations in this PASS family.
There is some reason to think that perhaps my Abner was the son of ALSEY PACE (illeg. son of STEPHEN PACE) and ZILPHA HALL (B.1800 Chatham Co., NC), who were married in Johnston Co., in 1820, so I may be barking up the wrong tree in checking into the PASS family lines.
