I am a descendant of Nicholas Patel-Lebey and Susanne Mercier who were married in France before 1738.
Their son Jean-Baptiste Patel-Lebey came to New France (Canada) and soon left Quebec for Detroit, then a totally French outpost on the frontier. He married there Marie-Anne Bouron at Ste-Anne's parish, Detroit, in 1748.
Their daughter married my gt. gt. gt. gt.gt. grandfather. I do not know if Jean-Baptiste Patel and Marie-Anne Bouron had any sons.
Nor do I know if other men named Patel came to Canada and founded families.
It is possible that they did. Depending on the record the name is sometimes also found
spelled as Patelle, Putel, Putelle.
I am posting this as it is an alternate possibility for the origin of some US Patels.
