Hello, Michael:

If you are descended from Louis Pattenaude of Detroit, Michigan (born in Quebec), he changed his name from one "t" to the 2 "t's".
He felt that was the proper way to spell his name, even though his parents in Quebec had spelled the name with only one "t".

For some of the many variations in spelling of the name, see Kelly Townsend's site: http://meltingpot.fortunecity.com/virginia/670/index.htm

Regards,
Dan
