My great great grandfather was a Thomas also. He came from the Bankfoot area and had a daughter born in 1818 atBelstane, or Bellston as they call it now. We have been unable to find his birth or death although we have his wedding at Little Dunkeld in 1817 to an Ann Scott. We have eliminated all the Thomas's except your ancestor, and I am starting to think that the 1817 wedding was a second marriage. His first family would be Grizel, Isobel, James John and Thomas ending in 1809; this makes sense since his father was a James, and so he named his first son. On the other hand, his first son with Ann Scott was Donald, a name with no history in the Patons in Auchtergaven. This is, of course, speculation, but it accounts for all the problems we have encoutered. I'd be interested to see your ancestor list, if you care to share it.
